GCSE English Language is a nationally recognised qualification. For many learners achieving a grade 4 or higher builds confidence in English skills as well as opening doors to greater work opportunities and higher education. This course is assessed through the completion of two exam papers which will be sat on fixed dates usually in June and will be published at the beginning of the course.  

Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at adult learners who don't currently have a grade 4 (or C) GCSE in English Language and who are prepared to meet the challenges that studying for a GCSE requires.

Entry requirements
Previous achievement of a grade 3 ( or D) in GCSE English Language or a level 2 Functional Skill in English or demonstrating, by initial assessment, that English skills are at level 2 will guarantee entry onto this course.

Course aims
By the end of the course learners will be able to demonstrate that they can: 1. read fluently and understand, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. 2. read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts 3. summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts 4. use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing 5. write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately 5. use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately 6. acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language 7. listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively. Qualification
GCSE English Language AQA specification 8700 Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing Paper 2: Writer's Viewpoints and Perspectives There will be a speaking and listening skills assessment with a grade recorded on the final GCSE certificate.

How will the ocurse be delivered?
The course is delivered in a two and a half hour session starting in September. The two mandatory exam papers are in the summer term usually in May and June, as well as a speaking and listening assessment. There are additional support sessions leading up to the exams. You will be continually assessed and supported with informative developmental feedback throughout the length of the course. Our tutors use past papers, exam questions, mark schemes and examiners' reports to make sure that you have the very best support in developing your skills and confidence towards to the final exams.

Will I need to study or practise outside the classroom?
Formal homework will be set on a regular basis incorporating research using recommended websites and practice examination papers and activities. Feedback will be given on homework set. There is a considerable amount of work for you to do in your own time for this qualification. Please allow a minimum of two hours per week for this.

What will I need to take to the course?
You will find it useful to bring a pen/pencil and notebook with you to your session. Please note that food and drink are not allowed during the session, although you may bring a bottle of water with you if required.

Progression
GCSE is the recognised standard for progression in many careers and further courses, including entry to certain university courses.
